| Horny Goat Weed May Be As Effective As Viagra In Treating Erectile Dysfunction

After undertaking an elaborate experiment on horny goat weed, Mario Dell'Agli, a University of Milan researcher and his colleagues have arrived at the conclusion that horny goat weed can be as effective as the Pfizer manufactured anti-impotency medicine Viagra in treating male erectile dysfunction.
According to sources, the researchers initiated the experiment by testing four horny goat weed plants in vitro for the purpose of evaluating their efficacy in inhibiting the phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE5), the enzyme responsible for stopping blood flow to the penis and leading to erectile dysfunction. However, sildenafil, the key ingredient in Viagra mainly functions by inhibiting the PDE 5 enzyme and when Mario Dell'Agli initiated the trial to find out if horny goat weed also functions similarly and treats erectile dysfunction in men, they strikingly found out that cariin, a specific compound present in horny goat weed inhibits the PDE5 enzyme effectively. Thereafter, the researchers extracted cariin from the horny goat weed plants and conducted experiment with six modified versions of the compound on the PDE5 enzyme to figure out that compound 5, the most effective among all these, functions effectively like Viagra .
However, compound 5 cannot be approved as a medicine right now as it is bound to undergo a whole lot of clinical trials before it is approved as a medicine. In fact, the compound 5 may take a lengthy period of 10 years before being released into the pharmaceutical market.
The horny goat weed research is known to be supported by private funds but Mario Dell'Agli declined to provide further information on this matter.
