| Pfizer Loses Viagra Case Filed Against FDA Secretary General
Date: 28th January 2009
Pfizer Incl., the manufacturer of the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra, filed a case against the Thailand Secretary General of the FDA (Food and Drugs Administration) for issuing an order back in 2003 that declared Viagra as a controlled medicine but unfortunately the Viagra manufacturer lost the case recently with Judge Chavalit Larpphol at the "Central Administrative Court" stating recently that the order issued by the FDA Secretary General was lawful.
Sources state that Pfizer wanted its anti-impotency drug to be a prescription-based medicine meant for sale at general pharmacies. But as due to the order issued by the FDA Secretary General against Viagra in 2003, the medicine was available for sale only in certain Thailand hospitals; Pfizer Incl. filed the court case against the FDA Secretary General but couldn't win it.
However, law makes it clear that it is under the authority of Drug Commission to provide recommendations on drug registration. But the option is open for Pfizer to appeal against the court decision if it desires.
