| Study Results Highlight That Men Taking Viagra Do Not Fall Prey To Vision Difficulties
Date: 14th April 2009
A specific study undertaken to explain reports of vision problems caused by the Pfizer manufactured anti-impotence medicine Viagra as well as Eli Lilly's erectile dysfunction drug Cialis establish that men administering Viagra or Cialis on a daily basis for six months are not prone to suffer from significant vision problems.
Dr. William Cordell from Lilly Research Laboratories in Indianapolis and his colleagues kick started the experiment by undertaking a randomly conducted study and observed specific changes in the retina among men administering Viagra or Cialis. The researchers undertook a thorough study of around 244 healthy or those aged in between 30 and 65 who were suffering from mild erectile dysfunction but did not have any vision problems. Among the 244 men enrolled for the study, the researchers gave 5 milligrams Cialis to 85 for a period of six months, 77 men were provided 50 milligrams Viagra (sildenafil) and 82 men were given a placebo pill on daily basis for six months.
Moreover, before and after treating the participants with Viagra or Cialis, they were subjected to specific eye examinations such as electroretinography that was aimed at calculating the electrical response shown by the light sensitive cells present in the eye.
After the completion of the study, the researchers published in the "Archives of Ophthalmology" that no collective damage or effect of medical importance was observed in the eye. Altogether, pertaining to visual function tests, electroretinography, assessment of eye anatomy as well as with regard to measurement of pressure in the eyeball, the researchers didn't find any considerable difference between treatment and placebo groups amid the 194 men who finished the experiment.
However, soon after the study results were obtained, the researchers stated that the experiment was limited as the used dosages of Viagra or Cialis were lower than other studies that evaluated retinal changes. Also, the researchers clarified that men suffering from eye problems were not involved in the study and hence the results obtained from the study couldn't be generalized.
Sources reveal that Elli Lilly, the manufacturer of the anti-impotence drug Cialis, funded and started this study.
