| Viagra Can Help Heart Problems Caused By High Blood Pressure
Date: August 3, 2006
Researchers have explored new possibilities of treating high blood pressure induced heart problem by Viagra.
Researchers in John Hopkins University studied 33 volunteers including Billie Marie who has a heart condition called cardiac hypertrophy, a disease caused by high blood pressure putting too much pressure on heart.
Dr. David Kass from John Hopkins University considers the heart benefit of Viagra in this special case as very unusual. The study shows that the enzymes blocked by Viagra reduce the stress on heart caused by high blood pressure.
The Director of Cardiology Services at Providence St. Joseph Medical Center , Dr. David Eisenberg considers the findings too priliminary though, he adds further that this treatment would be more helpful compared to the prescription medicines that dilate arteries and try to slow down the heart.
He considered the Viagra treatment better because the study on 33 Volunteers shows that Viagra does not dilate arteries.
When the tests were done on mice the results showed that the stress enlarged mice hearts stayed normal after Viagra dose.
Viagra tests on the healthy patients showed that Viagra caused stress reduction on their hearts by half.
Critics say that there are medicines available to treat cardiac hypertrophy. But Dr. Kass is hopeful and says Viagra can be a standard treatment for cardiac hypertrophy.
