Pfizer's Viagra Shows Good Sign in India
Date: March 9, 2006
The sale of Viagra is definitely on a roll in India after two months in spite of the initial goof ups. The sales report of the erectile dysfunction drug shows favorable sign, two months from its launch in the last week of December 2005.
Viagra, the trademark drug of Pfizer was launched in the Indian erectile dysfunction drug market, facing stiff competition from around 15 odd manufacturers of the generic version of sildenafil. Local pharmaceutical companies like Man Pharma, Cipla, Ranbaxy, Cadila Healthcare etc. have already floated their own drugs in the 80 crore erectile dysfunction market.
Though the price of Viagra at Rs.594 is twenty times the price of other popular drugs in the Indian market, Pfizer managed to make sales worth Rs.1.5 crore in just two months. The share of Viagra in the erectile dysfunction market has thus gone up to 1.8 percent.
K.G.Ananthkrishnan, senior director, pharmaceuticals, Pfizer India attributed the phenomenal success of Viagra to the quality of work and contributions of the company in the research and development of erectile dysfunction. Pfizer's target of getting a 10 % share in the erectile dysfunction market in two years time would prove to be cakewalk, if the present trend continues.
