| Viagra Success Propels Scientist To Hunt For Female Sex Enhancer
Date: April 10, 2007
As the Pfizer manufactured erectile dysfunction drug Viagra proves utterly successful in treating impotency in men, the scientific community is working on to invent a similar drug to increase sexual desire in women, most particularly to treat female hypoactive sexual desire disorder.
The hunt for a female sex enhancer is also the result of the failure of Pfizer manufactured erectile dysfunction drug Viagra in increasing female sexual desire. When Viagra was administered to women, it was observed that in the similar manner in which the drug led to the engorgement of penile tissues, it increased the engorgement of vaginal tissue also but the pelvic swelling induced by Viagra did not affect female sexual desire in any way.
There are other drugs also like Procter & Gamble's Intrinsa and a compound known as bremelanotide which have been used on women to ascertain the effects of the drugs on their sexual desire.
Intrinsa, the testosterone patch manufactured by Procter & Gamble didn't prove to be of much use as it was banned in 2005 by the Food and Drug Administration on the ground that its medical risks were much more in comparison to the benefits offered by the product. However, in clinical trials bremelanotide has shown significantly good results and more research on the compound in 20 clinical centers across United States is under way.
