| Viagra Help In Reducing Pulmonary Blood Pressure In COPD Patients Becomes Evident
Date: October 25, 2006
The conclusions derived from a study conducted at VU University Medical Center in Amsterdam , Netherlands states that the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra may play a pioneering role in helping out COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) victims in managing their high blood pressure levels in both cases; at rest and during exercises even when they are suffering from pulmonary arterial hypertension.
A research team headed by Dr. Sebastiaan Holverda of the department of pulmonary medicine at VU University conducted an experiment on 12 patients who have been identified as patients of COPD and were doubted to have suffered from Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (PAH). In the experiment, high blood pressure was measured in the patients through a process known as cardiac catheterization in which a thin plastic tube was inserted into the pulmonary artery of the body. Pulmonary blood pressure was calculated at rest and after the patients cycled for a period of three minutes.
After a gap of 45 minutes, the patients were orally administered with 50 milligrams sildenafil and blood pressure readings were taken again, both at rest and post exercise. When blood pressure of the patients was measured without Viagra administration, it was found that all the patients, regardless of suffering from PAH, had their blood pressure increased to a considerable level after exercising. But after Viagra administration it showed remarkable decrease.
These findings showed that Viagra usage may help COPD patients to control their blood pressure on occasions irrespective of whether they have succumbed to PAH or not.
