Viagra Misuse Feared by the Chemists in the Indian States
Date: December 27, 2005
Pharmacists or the chemists in the Eastern Indian State of Jharkhand have decided not to stock or sell the famous anti erectile dysfunction drug, Viagra, manufactured by Pfizer and launched in India this week itself. This was done so as the chemists felt that selling Viagra would create law and order problems.
We will not stock or sell the drug as it may lead to some people going berserk and creating law and order problems," said Amar Sinha, general secretary of the Jharkhand Chemist and Druggist Association. "We fear many customers will demand Viagra without a prescription," said a shopkeeper.
chemists are also wary that if the drug leads to any side effects, they will be blamed for selling it without prescription. They pointed out that many cough syrups were already being abused in the state with young people consuming them as intoxicants.
Viagra manufacturer Pfizer plans to launch the drug in the Indian market later this week. "We have requested Pfizer not to launch the drug in Jharkhand. If our request is ignored, we will boycott the drug," said Sinha.
