Sales of Viagra drop in the land of Kamasutra
Date: January 18, 2006
Pfizer's dream of reaping rich dividends in the ED drug market in the land of Kamasutra hasn't materialized yet. Traders, with stockpiles of Viagra, say that the sales of the much hyped Viagra, has hit rock bottom, unlike in the west.
Pfizer introduced its ED oral pill, Viagra for the first time to India towards the end of last year, after it was launched seven years ago in the west. Promotions were made amidst much fanfare in major cities of the country. But 90% of the traders in Mumbai say that they have made no sales even after the mega advertisements.
The company announced that they are satisfied with the sales made so far. The press release added that they are looking forward to an accelerating growth in their sales, as Viagra as at its nascent stage in India . But, they refused to give out their sales figures. The oral pill is promoted through urologists, endocrinologists and psychiatrists.
Experts and analysts of the Indian pharmaceutical industry refute Pfizer's stand. They reasoned that the price tag of Rs 463 per 50 mg and Rs 594 per 100mg of Viagra tablet makes it tough for them to compete with other Indian players in the segment. People prefer the cheaper versions like Torrent's Andro at Rs 27.16, Cipla's Ciagara at Rs 27, Ranbaxy's Caverta at Rs 32 for a 100mg.
