Counterfeit Drugs in Abundant circulation in the Kenyan Market
Date: January 12, 2006
Viagra has been successful as a sex drug worldwide and this is the reason why there are so many other anti impotence drugs too which have started flooding the market.
Viagra is the fastest selling drug in the developed world and because of tits high success rate there are copycats of Viagra flooding the Kenyan market. The branded product is too expensive for most would-be users but cheaper versions are now on the street, some of them generics and most of them of unknown quality, performance and even safety. Selling in the streets, bars and pharmacies of Nairobi are various brands with Viagra-like names - Kamagra, Vega, Venegra and Niagra.
The genuine Viagra remains expensive, though the price has dropped significantly. When it first hit the local market, the price was about Sh1000 per 50mg tablet but this has since dropped to about Sh500. But Kamagra and Venegra cost anywhere between Sh80 and Sh150 per tablet, making them much more affordable to a lot more people.
According to Joseph Yano, the legal officer at the Pharmacy and Poisons Board, the body that gives recognition to the drugs after testing its efficacy and safety in Kenya , the influx of sex enhancing drugs and supplements is worrying. He confirmed that some of the brand names were not registered in Kenya and he could not comment on their efficacy, safety or toxicity.
