Original Drugs being Overshadowed by Fake Drugs
Date: December 7, 2005
Bogus pharmaceuticals claiming to sell 'Super Viagra' and 'Viagra King' are rapidly flourishing in the Chinese markets. However their originality is debatable. Until one uses them, their effectiveness can not be estimated.
Viagra by nature is effective for four hours. The fake drug makers increase the percentage of sildenafil citrate in the drug to increase effects but that can be harmful to the customers. This growing trend is worrying Pfizer, its makers. The fake drug industry is costing the pharmaceutical companies thirty two billion dollars. The WHO predicts this could grow almost three times in four years if not handled with precaution. Governments and drug companies the world over are doing the best to stop this from going beyond control.
The control measures have yielded counterfeit drugs worth 4.3 million US dollars. In an "across the ocean tactic" to control the situation, a sildenafil citrate manufacturing unit was found which made the substance and sent packaged counterfeit pills to the port from where it reached Washington State.
Pfizer's case against the government is one of the classic cases why companies find this market so hard to conquer. Intellectual property is totally dependent on the law and here in China the system lacks three characteristics of a good system-transparency, predictability and fairness.
