State Funding of Viagra can be Axed
Date: January 15, 2006
The Governor of Albany, Governor Pataki has said that he will seek $1.3 billion cuts in the funds used for funding Viagra costs and the other cost savings in his budget proposal. He in fact wants the total elimination of public funding for erectile dysfunction drugs like Viagra.
Pataki aides said the governor wants to piggyback on action by Congress to ban federal Medicaid funding of sex drugs. Total government spending on Viagra and other erectile-dysfunction drugs in New York in 2004 was estimated at $21.8 million to cover 68,000 poor New Yorkers.
The state already banned public funding of the drugs for convicted sex predators after a shocking audit last year by Comptroller Alan Hevesi revealed that 198 state rapists and other sex creeps got freebie sex-enhancing drugs. There are many like Governor Pataki, who do not support the expenditure done on Viagra from the state's treasury.
